Quentin Trollip's book: Origami Sequence

Origami Sequence by Quentin TrollipThis is some exciting bit of news! The book I've probably awaited longest is available since yesterday. And of course I immediately ordered it. And maybe you'll fall in love with Quentin Trollip's designs as much as I have.

So, in about 2 week's time I'll be able to hold Origami Sequence by Quentin Trollip in my hands and fall into a folding frenzy. :)

You can buy the book in Nicolas Terry's origami-shop.com. I fear the book will not be available anywhere else. But while you're at it, the shop does offer lots of superb paper, other fantastic books, and some other bits and pieces.

And what else did I order, you ask?

I decided I really shouldn't get more paper right now. We have to stay reasonable sometimes. But I couldn't resist the temptation of getting:

do you think that the origami sequence is better then the origami essence? also, can you make a video on the tutankastein mask?

Hm, I really don't know. Origami Essence is a superb book, and will be very hard to top. Do I think Origami Sequence has the potential? Yes. Would it make Origami Essence less of a great book for me? Definitely no.

As to making a video of a model presented with the book, I'll first have to explore the designs. And ask for permission. I am hoping to demonstrate something from the book, though.

It's a bone folder, if you like, but with a shape and some thin points to be especially suitable for origami. Now whether I agree with that will have to wait until I have it myself. :)

i really dont see the difference between the bone folder and the ultimate wepon thing.i mean they both get the job done right?

Well, I'll find out. There are two aspects in particular that made me buy it. First, it's made of wood, and I want to find out what the difference is from using a bone folder made out of, well - bone. Second, it's got a long, thin point, which my current bone folder (and the bone folders you usually get) doesn't have. I do think that will prove useful.
In any case, I was just sharing what I ordered, not saying you should order it. After all, I haven't even tried it out myself. :)

Yes, diagrams for the Clydesdale horse are in the book.

It includes images of the table of contents. :) According to those the diagrams for the Clydesdale horse start on page 102.

Sorry, I do not have a favorite origami design. I guess I do have a list of models I especially appreciate, but it changes quite a bit over time.

I'll decide that once I have the book. I'll first flip through a couple of diagrams and then decide. Right now the high runners for the first fold are the African elephant, the Clydesdale horse, and the gray wolf.

I don't know if I can fall in love with his designs as much as you can,(only 10 but LOVE all your videos, enjoyed folding the scorpion) but I do like his pig you have in the gallery.

i know he does reviews of origami books but has he at one point made his own origami

I just folded the Vixen, from your tutorial and I must say you are a FANTASTIC teacher! I LOVE the way you explain things and demonstrate how to fold sinks. I've never folded a model with so many sinks in it (well, successfully anyway) and this model turned out exactly like the one in your video! I am VERY pleased!! If it as at all possible for you to create a tutorial for the Samurai Helmet beetle, or the Hercules beetle from Dr Robert Lang's Origami Insects II book, I would be most grateful!! I have the book, but trying to follow it...well, let's just say that I need help ;)
If Dr Lang will not allow you to do that, no problem, I understand. OR, I would also love to see a tutorial for the "Devil" model in Jun Maekawa's 'Genuine Origami' book, which I also have.
Oh, by the way, your video of you folding the cuckoo clock is ABSOLUTELY insane!! WOW!! you are the master!!
I have some extra large origami paper for folding the really complex models, but i'm running low because I try to fold them, but I get stuck...If I hadn't watched your tutorial on the vixen, I don't think I could have finished it either! But I did, and it looks great!

great to hear that you enjoy my videos, and that they're helping you progress! I fear I don't even own the book Origami Insects II, so the chance of me making a video on a model from that is zero. The same holds for "Genuine Origami". :(

Bummer...any other complex models that are similar to those, in books you have, that you could make some of? I'd be happy to send you my book for you to borrow if you would like so you could make a tutorial of one of these great models! Dr Lang's book is insane!. Maybe you could send me your Kamiya Satoshi book for me to look at while mine is in your home...

The problem is that it's difficult to make instructional videos on complex models in any case. If the model takes considerably more than an hour to fold, the video will simply turn out to be too long. I also have to admit that while I was quite interested in insect origami when I started, it doesn't capture me as much anymore. But I'll keep your query in mind.

I do have plans to demonstrate one model from the book. However, most of the models in the book are complex, so I'll have to check and see which model I can demonstrate in a video without making it hours long. So I'll first have to test-fold a couple of models.

Yes, but nothing that I was happy enough with to post a picture of. These models are a challenge to complete to the quality that Quentin Trollip has folded them in! I believe wet folding is quite essential for a couple of them.

I folded the skull and the Clydesdale horse. Neither turned out nice enough on my first fold to post a picture of it, though. I'll have to try again when I have more time. I fear I don't have time to fold much right now, am too busy with work. :(

on one of the first pages in the book it says "secret code : _ _ _ _ _ _ G"
do you know where in the book the code is located, and what to do with it?

There are some secrets hidden in the book. They can be found by closely reading the text and diagrams. You will find some oddities, and these should lead you to solve the secret code. I believe if you have the code, you can get access to extra material. At least that's how it was with "License to Fold": http://www.origami-s...

Sara,

So you think that for a first attempt you really should have the 50cm square paper that is recommended in the book? Looking through he diagrams it doesn't look like there are really any steps that get really small or fine. Just seems like an awfully big paper size for this model.

As a horse reference, I just did Kamyia's Sleipnir out of a 14" square with no problems. Not sure if that means anything, but should give you some idea of what I can do.
