Different sized sheets are used. Hence all the cubes can be stacked into one another. The biggest cube is folded from one piece of paper, as is the last one (3D view). All other cubes were folded from two sheets of paper. Each cube has a different locking mechanism, and the modular cubes are all bisected differently.

That sounds remotely familiar. I'd borrowed the book I used to fold these from a previous member of the Oxford Origami Society...
